Mosquito Mitigation Basics

There is nothing like going to eat out on the back patio on a nice summer evening and not being able to enjoy your meal because of shooing mosquitos away. Only then to come inside covered in mosquito bites.

Here are some of our top tips and tricks for preventing and getting rid of mosquitos on your property.

What does a mosquito bite look like?

Female mosquitos are the ones that bite, while males get their nutrition from plants and nectar.

Bites typically have the following characteristics:

  • A puffy, white, and reddish bump that appears soon after being bitten.
  • A hard, itchy, reddish-brown bump or bumps, appearing a day or so after being bitten.
  • Instead of hard bumps there are small blisters.
  • Dark spots that look like bruises

Signs that you could have mosquitos:

One of the biggest attractors of mosquitos to your property is standing water.  Adult mosquitos like to lay their eggs in this undisturbed bodies of water, where one female can lay up to 200 eggs at once. They also love to linger in dim shady areas, typically coming out at sunrise or sunset when there is high humidity.

The key to keeping mosquitos off your property is interrupting their lifecycle.

Mosquitos have four life stages: egg, larvae, pupa, and adult; so, interrupting that cycle will greatly limit the risk of exposure.
